Status Updates From A Bánh Mì for Two

When you like someone, I’ve realized, everything they do matters to you. Everything they do suddenly becomes intimate, and I find myself wishing to remember every word she says to me. Everything she does for me. All my thoughts point to Vivi.

“But do you both know why we only use broken rice grains?”.

“Because it tastes good?”

“That is true. But the story is, during times when things were so bad and people only had broken rice to eat and whole grain rice was a luxury, we created something filling out of poverty. Now the food is a popular Vietnamese cultural dish.”

“But what do you think happens when a war is over? Fighting is easy. Living is hard. And how do you live, or hold on to that hope of living, when you’ve seen your country torn apart? When you don’t know when life will look up again? It was so, so tough for everyone. And when all you know is harshness, you want to run away from it, too.”

I decide to just pretend; it’s easier than explaining all the whys.
