“THE Lycee of the Horse Soldier” gives us more back story to Damastes, and his entrance to the Calvary. We learn he did about average in his grades at the Lycee, and examples of his temper getting him into trouble on a number of occasions. The chapter ends at the beginning of Chapter 2.

“The Tiger at Night” gives us a complete back story of Damastes. He comes from a long tradition of military family, and resides in the jungle state of Cimabua. We see in his youth, his father prepared him for life in the army. This chapter, we also get our first taste of the widespread sexual content spread throughout the book. Not entirely too graphic, but adds a little spice.

“A Magician’s Dream” properly introduces us to Laish Tenedos. He is a man from a very small province much like Damastes. We can infer he comes from a family of reasonable means as he spent the majority of his life training in magic and sorcery. We find this chapter that the country of Numantia is in great peril and is not being well governed by the rule of 10.

Excellent first chapter which includes the famous Battle of Sulem Pass where our hero meets the diplomat Tenedos for the first time. A major battle with the Hills tribesmen and our first battle sorcery scene. These soldiers are very similar in style and make up of old Rome and even some of the terminology is the same.

Very good and engaging introduction. We meet our two main characters; Damastes a Cimabua who the book follows from his perspective and the Seer King Laish Tenedos who are exiled on their own individual islands. It certainly has me hooked from the start.
