In the real world, mythological beasts in medieval books came from medieval people panicking when they saw unfamiliar creatures and drawing them as monsters. Understandable: in a world before nature documentaries, the first sight of a rhino must be a lot.

This is a much more enjoyable read if you don’t take it as a serious book. My supporting evidence: the author quite literally used Ross and Rachel from Friends and whether they were on a break as a fairytale the main character told her minions….And of course the entire musical number

So, if you read this as a parody/comedy — it’s MUCH better.
