Status Updates From The Postcard

I have loved this book from the first chapter. The scene is set as a mother re-telling her daughter the story of their families survival and diaspora in the early 1900s.

For such a harrowing tale, it is familiar and a comfort to read the Yiddish words and phrases. I carry both pride and horror reading about the Jewish diaspora.

“It speaks to me in a way that others cannot understand,” the artist Louis Bourgeois had written of her years at the school. She’d written another phrase too, one that had stayed with me always. “If your need is to refuse to abandon the past, you must recreate it.”
