I don't usually care for first person POV altho' it's ubiquitous in gothics, but I'm enjoying the h's voice here, she's not a prim, perfect orphan and sh'es not afraid to get snarky (or tipsy)

Alex, the dashing, black-haired son of the family, danced the last waltz with Lorna and then left her in the middle of the ballroom. Lovely -- so our redoubtable heroine grabbed a bottle of champagne, a plate laden with hors d'oeuvres, and fled to her room for "an orgy of food, wine, and tears." I'm sure the night is not over!

It's hard to tear myself away. One brother dead of the three and it's perfectly obvious which one is the villain. It doesn't make it any less fun to read.

Oh this is so good. It's a turn of the century setting (I think, because there are still stables). The old lady who wants help discovering who murdered her husband is a Scottish lady. The heroine, Lorna MacDougall, is a 6' almost tall red-head -- curious but not stupid. A native Vermonter w/a New Englander's caution and pride.
