Favourite chapter:
10 Rogue Practice. James is in the coffeehouse, Buck Rogers 21st Century Beans. Why? This chapter is where James shows he understands her. He wants to help her, but he also knows she must feel she’s gone it alone. He gets her!

Taster 3:4
“I don’t know why you don’t improve the device,” he said in a matter-of-fact tone. “You clearly hate recharging it—why not do something about it?”
But at his smirk, she folded her arms. So, he doesn’t think I can? He’s wrong.

As impossible as it sounded… challenge accepted.

“Well, you could loan me a recharge cable… I mean, a multi-connector would be awesome. I need one of the practically obsolete connectors for this boogaloo. They’re next to impossible to get now.
“In the glove box,” he said. She thought she detected a hint of satisfaction in his expression.

Taster 3:2
Athena looked at her device. “Noooo,” she said under her breath.
The car swerved a bit. “What is it?”
“Oh, I’m stupid, I picked the wrong one and my shard’s in Beth’s.”
James peered at her NETcell charging. “How old is it anyway?”

Taster 3:1
In James’ car after soccer:
“You said you’d fix it,” James said, “but hey, that was fast! That kind of repair’s fiddly.”
“I need my NETcell for work. Beth gave me hers until I’ve tested mine. But no charge is no charge.”

“…Please tell me their story isn’t over?!!!?”

Without a charged device, tardiness was an estimate at best. No more overthinking. I’ll borrow a charge cable. If Luci’s (bf) not there, I’ll ask James. I mean… Coach James.

For Columbus’ sake, why can’t I get those teens of mine to leave my tech alone? Last month, my induction recharger. This time, my backup charge cable. How the hell am I meant to keep food on the table with all these extra expenses?

Taster 2:1
Seven months earlier… A twig snapped close behind Athena and her proximity function failed to ping. She quickened her pace toward town and her second practice for the Underbury house-league. People on Mars and I still have a flat NETcell.

Favourite character:
Athena Cartwright, of course. She doesn’t want to set a bad example to her children. Let’s face it, teenagers pick up swearing from…? She tries not to swear. Instead, “Christopher Columbus!” pops into her head.

He swung his zoomed gaze across the table. The two devices lay near one another.
James and Athena had been observing them for the past ten minutes, prior to his shot. I think she’s completed it. If I can’t have it, neither can you, sweet cheeks!

Gord squeezed the trigger of his silenced Ruger. He focused on the upper corner of the glass while James Laurent and Athena Cartwright hid beneath the kitchen table. As requested, two scared individuals. Now, to stop their meddling in oil affairs.

I loved 💙 writing tech inventor, Athena Cartwright’s story zero to the Age of Unity novels. Not only for the quirky meet-cute, but she receives a tech challenge. One, if solved, would certainly solve a lot of my problems. If she accepts the challenge her life & her teenagers’ lives will take a different trajectory.
