Joe Boyd is thankfully colour-blind & aware of the racial undercurrents that swirl around this music.How Castro lifted the colour bar in Cuba but then cracked down on what he saw as sexual permissiveness, even dancing - leaving the way open for New York to sweep in,as indigenous Afro-Cuban stars were swept aside .

Just finished the first chapter. Joe Boyd was one of the record producers involved in the creation of the "world music" category, but his expertise crosses all musical borders. It is a joy to read, too many anecdotes to mention. Savvy - and politically acute. Has me rushing to the playlists 😄
