What I often explain to my students is the shock of the twentieth century— by 1970 the Beatles were over, we’d been to the moon, and the world had witnessed the theorisation, invention, and execution of nuclear annihilation. So, it is shock in the sense of freezing the senses, being inarticulable, overwhelming. Can you blame the thinkers of that century for attaching such significance to the banality of evil?
