she meets some girl who is the same race as her and shes giving off big lesbian vibes which is good for Leila I guess. and now Leila is joining theater for her.

Leila has a friend named Greg I think, I honestly don't remember, but he likes her and she doesn't. they somehow still had some sort of make out sesh though, its confusing because Leila is a lesbian and she literally says that

the speed of the book picked up super fast, which considering this is a MS book I get, but it's a little disappointing. The prom scene was so fast paced, it would've been nice to drag out a little longer. I also think the outting & responses of others was relatively over and underdone, and the transition back for Lei felt rushed and somewhat out of character. The talk of Muslim intersection came in @ an awk interval.

As I'm reading, I am expecting some of the "plot twists" and while it is quite corny, I can't help but really love and engage with it too. I love Lei finding her friends, new and old and being able to have banter with Saskia. I also really empathize with her confusing experiences with Saskia, who just led her on and then wants to be friends after all that AND doing so literal illegal/fucked up shit. Super relatable!

this book is ADDICTING. I don't know if it's because it reminds me of middle school books but it's a really well paced and good read. it's corny but it's like a good type of cheesy of like teenager HS horror - farting on stage to actual horror - being disowned for being gay - all come into light and is handled, in my opinion, really well. This reads like a really good book for middle schoolers and I vibe with that!

I am enjoying this so far! It's reminding me of henna wars ever so slightly which I am not opposed to - a slightly more self aware version of that with an MC that isn't too snobby. I mean, the Mayflower line kind of irked me, but Leila is a really realistic HS girl who recognizes her place and is very observant, which I appreciate. A lot of world building is done well at the start which helps set the background well!
