A story of the mission to the Cherokee Nation organized by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. The Brainerd Mission was named for David Brainerd, an earlier missionary to the Lenni Lenape Indians of Delaware. His journal was a handbook for later missionaries. The Brainerd Mission gave its name to two neighborhoods in Chattanooga: Brainerd and Missionary Ridge.

The First chapter is a very brief Cherokee history leading up to the founding of the Brainerd Mission, Chattanooga. It is a great companion to Walker's other book, As the Indians Left It, a history of the Audubon Acres sanctuary of the Chattanooga Audubon Society.
