Climax is fast paced, somewhat predictable but with unexpected moments that make it shocking at the same time. Though the events that transpired felt a bit rushed and lacked the same level of detail that the build up had been given. The denouement felt rushed and could have been drawn out longer for the amount of time that it was covering

Loved the excerpts from Professor A.K. Senga’s text about fae -supposed to be a sort of primary nonfiction reference source written by a character featured in the book briefly and as a sort of background history for the reader that is relevant to the story and chapters it precedes.

I feel like something absolutely horrible is going to happen soon and I am so emotionally invested it’s probably going to make me very upset. The characters are flawed but likeable. I like the fact that fencer’s have superhuman powers but aren’t invincible, have limits on these powers and can be as easily injured as your average human

“They’re playacting a history that isn’t theirs and probably doesn’t exist”
In reference to church dedicated to worshiping the fae that began in the 1990s
Based on old literature and folktales rather than actual facts, history etc.
social critique of religious practices

Actually really like this book but reading it slowly because I’m reading it out loud to my daughter before nap times and during quiet times. We are trying to avoid/limit screen time in the home. Most books I read are not acceptable for children in any way shape or form but this fantasy so far is more like a Harry Potter novel in terms of the deaths of characters within the narrative. Magical and lack in blood/gore

Actually really interesting social analysis and critique of Western patriarchal hegemonic capitalist society, its political values and ideologies, and its inherent biases in regards to what is knowledge, who is a expert/acceptable source of it vs a common person, who decides this.
