Status Updates From The Free People’s Village

Yeah, I'm totally exhausted by Maddie at this point :(

The narrator keeps mis-pronouncing Paolo Freire's name and there's a funny bit when a student at school calls him 'Fieri', but then Maddie corrects them, but the narrator mispronounces the name lol.

Okay, since around 41%, it's deffo gotten better, I'm open to see where it goes.

At least Maddie knows what ACAB means, but then she explains the acronym on page and I'm like 😬😬

Oof, tbh this feels too much like baby's first politics 😅 I mean the politics is fine, great even, but having such a naive main character who needs to be educated is painful.

“I wound up sending thirty dollars… of course, it was also woefully inadequate-a tiny drop in the ocean of reparations required for me to make up for being a colonizer, and benefitting from white supremacy, and living on stolen land, and gentrifying the Eighth Ward…”

Every damn page is written like this and it’s seriously grating me. The action is finally starting to pick up though

Maddie’s about to go to a Black church — I was cringing too hard so I had to stop.

The book is quick to lay out a sympathetic case for Maddie — which is vital because she is really obnoxious and unlikable from the get-go. I am still very unclear on the politics of this novel, and I have concerns…
