Well, some of this is just pointless...

Well, half of the stories are rather pointless attempts at bizarro fiction. Waste of talent...

First story is in tone and style very close the fantastic "Zero Saints". Excellent" Let's see if Osborne can keep it up.

“There were three fights, two broken plates, a miscarriage and a bathtub full of moonshine at the wake of John Wily. They didn’t call it a “wake”. They weren’t really sure what to call it, so they just called it a “reception”, like it should have had invitations printed in cursive on whalebone.”

Osborne has this very engaging and endearing way of narrating in the 3rd person, like in a folktale. Keeps an eclectic bunch of stories well sewn together.

THREE THEORIES ON THE MURDER OF JOHN WILY was probably my favourite short story I've read this year. Osborne is at his best when he narrative in vernacular. He's doing it right.

The style definitely takes some getting used to, but I love the underlying theme of men's bond with nature.
