Any book that has me so invested in the characters that I keep ending up in tears deserves 5 stars.

On impulse, I kissed him, and it was as though the final piece of the puzzle of who I was fell into place at last.

Hope spread across Rune's face. I thought about why I'd chosen him in the first place. The reasons were muddled and hadn't yet fully returned, but I knew we'd married for far more than just an alliance. I trusted him. I loved him. I chose our union for him, not just the power being together had offered.

"That's literally all I was. From... from my bones to my crown to —Without that, what am I?"
"You are you. Just you. Just—"
"Val!"
Rune stood at the clearing entrance, mouth agape. I could only stare right back at him, a thousand different emotions colliding in my head.
"Me," I whispered.

He threw himself to the edge and watched her fall, feeling as though a piece of him had been ripped out and was falling along with her. Her body glowed, brighter and brighter, until he had to cover his eyes.

Because if I was never meant to live, then I was glad that I'd lived even a little bit with him.

But he seemed to be able to fill in the blank. He gently pulled me up and put my hand over his heart gem. Its warmth radiated through my entire body.
"This is yours. Now and forever. You never had to carve it out, but you stole it regardless."

Rune looked over at me. "Let me know what's made you shed tears, and I'll make them cry twice as much. Unless the one who did so is me."

"Everyone needs my attention, always," Rune said. "But I find doing nothing with you is better than doing something with anyone else."

I love him.

"Always," Rune promised.

I kissed him, as gently as I had the first time he proposed, and that shut him up. I kissed him until we'd each had our fill, for now, and as one we knelt, our foreheads pressed together, our breathing- slightly ragged-in tandem. My entire body was alight with the feel of his energy and heat, relishing in the sensation of, for the first time, not fighting what felt right.

I thought my face would split from how wide my own stupidly ridiculous smile was.
Rune looked startled. "I don't often see you so happy, especially not when you look at me."
"I smile at you," I protested, the tips of my ears heating.
"When you aren't actively driving me insane, I'm sure I smile at you."
"Not nearly so often as I'd like. It appears to be something I must constantly work to remedy—"
