I was disappointed to find that this is a post-1978 edition of Mormon Doctrine, with Bruce's pre-Official Declaration racial views edited out. I remember reading the earlier edition as a kid and being quite taken aback by it. Of course there's still plenty of racism in this book, but not as much as there used to be.

It's really a shame the church stopped publishing this book 5 years ago. It had a 52 year reign as one of the definitive (if not the only definitive) work on LDS theology. Of course many of the doctrines McConkie held dear are now seen as something between hearsay and heresy, but at least he had the wherewithal to state them clearly and emphatically.

I'm not reading this book cover to cover I've chosen to read it by topic and reading the scripture referenced with it. This then will be an ongoing journey.

I think that Bruce R. McConkie is amazing, and I am happy I know his brother Oscar.
