Still think Morgan is an idiot but I as I'm older I better understand the love-stuff that's far removed from how couples normally fall in love in stories.

"The air was warm as wedding cake" - ah, the early works of Beagle when some metaphors were just too weird and a bit off :)

Being 44, the age Rebeck thinks Mrs Klepper to be, I realise that this might be the one thing that gives away, that Beagle was 19 (!) and unexperienced, when he wrote this thing. I love Gertrud as a character, but she sounds 30 years older than she is.

Not sure if Beagle intended Michael to be as dislikable as he is, but I'm sure he was meant to be flawed. I don't mind either as long as I get where they are coming from and there is growth. First one check, second one we'll see. And there are Rebeck and the Raven which I like very much.
