Status Updates From The Oxford Book of English ...

So so so keen to read more of Walter De La Mare but his spectral stories are so difficult to find in print 😭

Bro just loved his HB in all sorts of ways and I gotta respect that in all its repressed Edwardian beauty. On a real, the little ghost by Hugh Walpole was yet another sucker punch selection - could really feel the grief and vulnerability seeping off the page :(

Defintely one of the better put together Ghost story anthologies I’ve read and a great introduction to some of the heavy hitters in the genre I’ve up to this point not read a single bit of ink like Algernon Blackwood and Vernon Lee. Also incredibly grateful the stories are listed in chronological order - can’t wait to get to the postwar stories!!!

A Lost Ghost might, along with E.F. Benson’s how fear departed from the long gallery, be one of the saddest ghost stories I’ve yet to read…what a sucker punch at 7am 😭

Try as I might I can’t get into stories of the decedent bent. Sure, I can appreciate the literary quality of these pieces, but, for me, personally, it doesn’t really fit with the form of Ghost Story…

Went back and read the introduction for this collection too; was very good and perhaps one of best assessments of the Ghost story I’ve thus far read. I will sure to consult it later this year.
