Very interested in the subject matter, but not impressed with the style so far.

Teacher, did I time travel to my high school AP lit class? Sometimes that's how I feel when I read this book. I feel like it's more a discussion on the concept of "sentimentality" than any "new" (can their be anything new at this day and age?) information. Admittedly, it is interesting how different generations all looked at the case with different agendas... Still I would say this is atypical as crime books go.

Sentimental! So many sentimental sentiments! It's sort of aggravating to read how it's always the woman's fault for her disgrace once the libertine's have had their pleasure. That's all an aside though! Less than an unraveling of the mystery behind the motive in the murder of Martha Ray this is more of an exploration of public sentiment, both from contemporaries and later historians.
