This book is more interesting than one would expect of a heavy-duty book about medicine. I have learned a lot about the history of the battle against cancer, which, of course, is deeply entwined with the history of medicine. Cancer apparently goes back to the beginning of the human species. Early treatments and research was often gruesome but fascinating.

One of the largest books I've ever read outside of school, this book is literally a wealth of knowledge on the history of cancer - descriptions of the maladies in ancient times, to the steps and missteps of radiation and chemotherapy, retroviral cancer, cancer common in victims of AIDS, to the present and future of gene therapy and cancer-targeting therapies.
