This had so much potential, but I couldn't pinpoint why I wasn't liking it until it finally clicked: the situationship between the main characters is unfair. While both leads are supposed to have trauma, the story treats Vaduin's trauma as way more important than Danica's. His past is used as a plot device to excuse his terrible treatment of his soulmate, while Danica is just forced to take it.

Okay this is a lot better this time around. I think the protagonists in this book are just so startlingly bad at communicating when the last three books they were fairly good at talking things out that it left a bad taste in my mouth. The spicy bits are still weird for me but can be flipped past fairly quickly.

I started reading the next book but realized the politics were evolving in ways I'd have to play catch up so I'm giving this another go. Now n=knowing what I am dealing with, I'm starting to take a higher interest in these two
