It's still early to judge but the slow pace, character driven narrative and prose remind me quite a bit of Guy Gavriel Kay and Daniel Abraham. High praise for many readers but for me this raises some worries as those two are not really in my favorite authors list...

"they railed against a governor-king under which they had never served, bellowing for justice for a land in which they had never lived, uttering phrases of a language they barely spoke. and all it brought them was chaos and division."

Really enjoying the introduction into the Tsar's story. The wording is so precise and I missed it the first time around. I don't think I understood the moral premise, though now I do. I love the depth of character building here and the promises made to the reader about who the Tsar really is. Really quality word-smithing here

It's rewind time. Listening to this again to dissect and pay closer attention to the million little details in the story.

I'm just past the part where captain Hodge dies, a point in the story I remember having taken much longer to reach during the first listen. I used to think this was a slow burn, but the progression and character building has changed so much in my mind as I revisit this story!
