A door behind him opened.
“Now, now, now,” the voice leaked venom onto the remaining hope Raven had sparked in him. “Put him back where he belongs,” they commanded.
Guards appeared at both of his sides and hauled him back to the leather chair he sat in previously. In the chair he hated, in the room he despised.

Enzo roared and yanked Levi’s other hand upwards, slicing Raven lightly across the bottom of her foot. The blood began to drip down the knife and slowly down Levi’s hand. Jayce caught the anguish in Levi’s eyes before he continued to heave Raven up as quickly as he could. She was approaching the ceiling, but he needed her there first if he had any chance of winning this with her much shorter reach.

He finally found a question that wouldn’t target the same people as before. “Never have I ever been held captive in a Government prison.”
This game had two parts. One was to show that all these contestants earned their spot here and deserved punishment. The other was to create a rift between the teams as they grew close due to the passage of time.

The TV screen flashed on in my room, and we both turned to it as all the other light sources, including medical equipment, were shut off.
The Host's face illuminated the screen. "I hope you rested well, my dear 20, the Sponsors have missed you."
The Host's tone was off, more so than usual. He wasn't singing, he wasn't angry, he wasn't scared. He was reading from a script.

Moving to the opposite side of the table, I sat next to Jayce, watching 197’s crew approach—well, most of it. 195 was notably missing. It took a minute to find him, but when I did, he was weaving through the crowd before disappearing from view again.
197, as massive as he was, folded himself gracefully into the chair directly across from me. He didn’t even acknowledge Jayce.

Almost as if on cue, a door to the left whipped open.
There stood 182; he examined us, quirked an eyebrow and turned his head. “Found our roommates y’all!”
The twins popped out behind him, a sizable smile forming on 173’s face, but 174’s lips remained a tight line.

The three nodded once more to each other. 182 approached the woman's square to my left, 174 clapped, and 182 hopped in just as it turned red, almost as if he knew it would. The woman in the square huddled in on herself, as 182 jumped out and landed right before me. Whatever he saw must have messed up his beat, because when 174 clapped again, he hesitated.

I attempted to shake away my uneasiness. I cast one more look around our cage. Besides us, the room was completely bare.
“Well?” The man’s furious voice snapped, prompting me to answer his question. “How are you still alive?”
My eyesight once more disappeared as my mask's eye slits were covered. "I don't know," I whispered to the man's impossible question.

I was expecting a quick read. Something to hold me over. But when I saw the word “tortured” i was hooked.
