Pg 223 “they kept to a prearranged script about feeling trapped in the wrong body and exploring society’s gender binary. They knew this was what they were supposed to say, that these words like magic spells would invite the sympathy or broad minded citizens and progressive journalists”
I mean I absolutely hate this. Portraying trans people as manipulative attention seekers.

Pg 204 Now she knew that food novels (graphic novels in this case) did what music did, unlike fragments of poetry and philosophy. Fragments of poetry and philosophy pricked, she thought, the mind, an obvious and therefore stimulating irritant; music and novels by contrast, leaked silently into the heart until they drowned it. It’s only January and I’m only 1/3 through this novel but I can already tell this is going to be a top three contender for the year.
I need more books like this in my life.

Kind of waiting for it to come back around. From what I know about John pistelli, he can’t just be here to cry about pronouns in 2024-25.
The major strength of the novel is how well he nails the insufferable elder millennial English major, the world he actually knows. The big weakness is how utterly he’s failed to nail the zoomer. It feels like a guy in his mid 40s reporting from the Gen Z exhibit at the zoo.
