Mercy consists in this: that to unite a soul to Him, in this world His exercises all rights of justice over that soul, throwing it into the purging fire of ordeals… God’s holiness does not allow Him to unite with any soul burdened by the slightest sin. In this, His mercy too is transcendent: ours closes its eyes to wrong-doing, God’s demands all the more satisfaction in that it intends to confer more bliss.
