Interesting. Tendency to go into tangents, to get lost in the web of words mars the impact of the book but still a good read.

There's a bit in the essay on the Symposium on Women in Science Fiction (where Delany rails wonderfully against sexism) where he says that himself, this guy Jeff Smith and *Tiptree* have to reckon with the sexism. This is very fun, because this is two years before Tiptree was revealed as a woman!

'I feel the science-fictional-enterprise is richer than the enterprise of mundane fiction. It is richer through its extended repertoire of sentences, its consequent greater range of possible incident, and through its more varied field of rhetorical and syntagmic organization. I feel it is richer in much the same way atonal music is richer than tonal, or abstract painting is richer than realistic.'

“Pornography, comics, science fiction, poetry, westerns, mysteries, and the serious novel all can and must be examined seriously by the serious critic.”

“What,” my reader may ask, “does Quine’s hesitation to quantify across predicates or the play of light on Mykonos in winter have to do with science fiction?”
