It is quite fascinating to read this, right after A Master of Djinn. The books have this odd similarity, except suddenly, heterosexuality and white males are back…in a bad way. Ah, 1970s genre fiction - aimed at a specific demographic and without much that would ever attract anyone else. Similar plots in SF/Mystery hybrids…but completely opposite in every other way. Thank goodness things changed.

All those decades reading Science Fiction, and I’m pretty sure this will be my first Goulart foray. And I get to him, ironically, because I like to check out former Edgar winners and nominees…and that’s a Crime & Mystery book award! All those SF “100 Best” lists I took recs from never put me onto a Goulart book, nor did my occasional interest in Hugo winners etc. it took a list of Edgar winners to bring me here.

This book is ridiculous! A little lacking in description too. I also wish it were actually post-apocalyptic, not just a weird future.

medioker and sexist. The comedy is not all that funny. The plot feels unattached.
