Very interesting to learn the details of all kinds of English language references that I've only known by their context.

A very readable collection of word and phrase origins and examples. A perfect companion for the room in which Uncle John's Bathroom Readers are read. Or anywhere else. Most of the references are familiar to me, but not all. Even the familiar ones sometimes include background that I wasn't aware of, or interesting, helpful, and often entertaining examples. (I admit to skipping most of the examples for familiar ones.)
