Illich's chapter made me think, because he always makes me think. But, like in another one of his book, Tools For Conviviality, his recommendations typically require "going backwards," they are intrinsically degrowth proposals. In practice, this means that if we could achieve his ideal society, many more people would die.

He is an engaging writer who is largely “vibes-based.” So when you agree, you nod along. But when you disagree, the arguments seem obviously wanting.
