Many conservative men of God in our day have championed the cause of biblical inerrancy. However, some of those same well-meaning shepherds actually are functional errantists! They give the impression that they believe the Scriptures contain error, not by what they profess in their theology but by the way they handle the Bible in their preaching. . . . his theology may be right while his preaching may be unbiblical.

Many preachers today go into the pulpit and attempt to conduct large-group counseling. . . . the role of the sermon in pastoral preaching began to shift from a focus on corporate Christian living to instruction and care for the individual. . . . as individualized care given by the shepherd to individual sheep as opposed to the historical emphasis on the shepherds who feed and lead the flock.

Students often ask me in preaching classes, 'When do you get to the point that you don't get nervous when you preach?' I always answer them the same. If the preacher ever gets to the point that he doesn't get a little nervous when he preaches, he better stop preaching because he's lost the awe of the task!
