Yozo cannot understand what motivates people or what makes them happy, and he struggles to find meaning in ordinary human life. Frightened and lonely, he feels like an outsider among people he cannot comprehend. Unable to say no for fear of displeasing others, he invents a mask: the jester. By joking and making people laugh, he hides his confusion and wins acceptance, though the act deepens his isolation.
