“Nateq, the female Marxist historian … : 'I was so wrong’ … she recounted her role in 1979. ‘I was the one who disrupted the demonstrations and helped shut them down. I betrayed women.
I called them counter-revolutionaries and liberals that should be opposed. I said Hijab didn't matter. What I didn't understand was that someone who tells you what to wear will soon also tell you what to think?’” 🙃

“Daneshvar [a female writer!!!!] said: 'We should first take care of the economy, get our agriculture to some level, bring about a government of justice and freedom... and we can then get to side issues...such as woman's attire’ This attitude soon infected sections of the international feminist movement.”

“Khomeini's vision left no room for Iranian women as they actually lived their lives … In 1963 he had opposed female suffrage and called on people to 'express your disgust at equality of rights, of women's participation in society which will come with endless corruption’ … To build his ideal society, Khomeini needed to deal with the women.”

Opposing an oppressive regime is a noble cause, but supporting colonial powers in response to your government’s policies is deeply hypocritical. The same applies to Arabs who support the Iranian government in the name of their people’s interests. You cannot acknowledge the brutality of occupation while pretending to simply choose peace. Freedom that comes at the expense of others is neither just nor lasting.
