“I’ve long been confounded by the expectation that we simply accept the dealings of the powerful as unexplainable.”

'Datafication, or the process of rendering our lives as data, is first and foremost a kind of surveillance designed to impose classifications and norms on the surveilled, while devaluing way they understand themselves. It's a way to encourage artists to minimize their own conception of their work, and maximize its machine legibility.'

That's gonna stick with me, and not just in the context of Spotify or music.

"I'm half done with this and can barely keep my eyes open. This is just soooo boring. Pelly repeats the same points over and over and over and never in a fresh way. This might have made a decent long essay but as an almost 200 page book it is dire. So close to just abandoning this."
