I love how Chambers uses dialogue as one of the reader’s main views into the reality behind Hildred’s delusions, since it’s the one bit of his perception he doesn’t seem to be able to manipulate. It’s certainly possible for Hildred to misinterpret the words of those around him, but the reality of what they convey are laid bare to the reader - like his crown being made of brass rather than gold.
