After a trip to Holland to paint the tulip fields, Monet was inspired to create similar effects in his own garden. The pink stucco exterior of the house was restored and Monet meticulously supervised the painting of the shutters in a shade of blue green.

Just three years after the family's arrival at Giverny in 1886, not only did Monet begin to enjoy a large increase in the sales of his work, but his travels also reflected an upturn in his fortune...Monet eventually bout the property...the combination of ownership and greatly improved finances encourage him to renovate and enlarge it.

During his 43 years at Giverny Monet's routine seldom varied. He woke early, at four or five. Opening the window he would study the sky. If the dawn augured well for that day's weather he would take a cold bath, followed at 5:30 am by a hearty breakfast. He then set off to paint, sometimes with members of his family as helpers, returning at 11 am. Lunch had to be served on the dot of 11.30 am...
