Mudito/Humberto just wanted a name for himself, but after getting involved with Jerónimo he just fell down a dark path.

We're entering that territory where we wonder how much of this is real and how much of this is Maudito/Humberto's crumbling sanity.

Damn, Humberto. Nobody likes you.

Interesting how a few characters we met originally in Maudito/Humberto's perspective are revealed to have deformities this late in the book. He never mentioned their deformities in his perspective, but Jerónimo does.

I knew Maudito/Humberto and Jerónimo were repugnant, but damn.

Well, I now know why Maudito/Humberto hates Jerónimo so much.

The way Donoso just seamlessly transitions between Jerónimo and Maudito perspectives without you noticing at first is amazing.

Jerónimo might be the only rational person, but he isn't any more moral than anyone else.

This section between Jerónimo and his uncle is written more straightforwardly than the previous sections. A stylistic choice or did José Donoso just start to write differently? I know he had to step away from the book at times due to health issues.
