Love the cover, read one other book by this author a long time ago; time for another. I have recently acquired a bunch of Black Lizard books from a store that is closing later this year, and Whittington was the author most represented down in their basement…so now I have them!

Picked up about 5 pages after my last update. Unpleasant but intriguing.

May's Group read for "Pulp Fiction." Harry Whittington was known as the "King of the Pulps," a prolific writer who wrote under as many as a dozen pen names. Here, Mike Ballard, a cop on the take, is called to clear a man on death row, although he says he doesn't give a damn. This surpasses the hardboiled genre and is a classic short noir, where the protagonist's own flaws are paramount to the plot. Sizzling heat.

Unpleasant, so far. And not in a Jim Thompson "unpleasant" way.
