The fact that now it [immigration] is a wing of Homeland Security tells us much about how immigration is perceived by the government since the turn of the 21st century...if immigration were its own department or if it were still under the DOJ or the Department of Labor, we would regulate it in a way that would be more humane and would probably be more beneficial both to immigrants and to the economy.

The truth is that being an immigrant in the United States takes a lot of work and a lot of time and a lot of money. But it also takes a tremendous amount of luck and generosity of people who just choose to be kind.
