The firestorm grew far beyond any human intervention as it swept east and south, devouring everything in its path, as many people dying from asphyxiation as from the flames themselves. Many more died as the grid failed and nuclear power plants were compromised and failed, the lethal fallout picked up by the winds and carried eastward, silent death raining down ahead of the consuming fire that followed.

Okay, I'm buckled up...

The voracious flames swept on until all of California was on fire. It continued to spread, disregarding the rivers in its way and the futile efforts of those trying to knock it down. It met with more of its kind, multiple firestorms joining to form a beast unlike anything ever seen before as it consumed everything in its path, an unstoppable force burning its way east.

Derek dove under the water until his belly scraped the bottom. He looked through the water as a hellscape of red flames rolled across the surface, hands over his ears to block the muffled screams of those who hadn’t plunged under in time, bodies shuddering in agony, churning the water with their dying convulsions. He prayed that he could hold his breath for long enough as the fire boiled the water above him.
