"The further away from solid land she got, the more aware she became that she was travelling deeper into their world — the ghost of an ancient landscape shrouded in shifting veils of sea and sandflat, each mimicking the other. It looked calm and still, but it had a history of swallowing people."

This one hooked me right away!
"There was something about the greasy black swell of the seawater as it roamed around and around its prison that reminded him of a zoo animal long gone insane with the claustrophobia, endlessly pacing the limits of its confinement."

Full disclosure, I picked this book for the cover art before reading the blurb.
I was struck with apprehension upon realizing this is written by the same author as Bone Harvest (sorry James Brogden, it just wasn’t for me). I opted for the audiobook and WOW I am so glad that I did! The Strandling is 100% my type of book!
