the chronology printed of everything happening at the same time, a world mad and violent, is overwhelming — and it’s deeply grounding, to read people in that maelstrom; I think often of the old yellowed library check out card for Mary Borden’s memoir of her time as a nurse for the trenches, and how many many times it was stamped for check out in the late 1930s and early 1940s
