God I love this writing: Emmett went out later to smoke a joint and found Alice on the porch. It was dusk, the sky glowing with peach-colored light where the sun had set. He sat with her on the swing and said nothing at first, listening to the crickets and the burbling of the koi pond’s filter. They looked out at the subdivision’s underdeveloped land—a tussocky field, ribbons of mist hovering above the grass.

It took me a minute to get into it, but it reminds me of two different books I enjoy: a Sally Rooney book, where you’re told what the dialogue is, and Ocean Vuong’s Emperor of Gladness, where you dee rarely written but very common characters that can only written be someone up close.
