"It is a naïve rendering of 'turn the other cheek' to think that Christians are instructed to forgive all trespasses." – I mean they very literally are...
"If they did, then there would be no protection against self-seeking behaviours within groups." — there's a big difference between forgiving a person and punishing a behaviour (+ religions should favour reconciliation over punishment)

Much of DS Sloan's work, including this book is funded by the John Templeton Foundation. They tend to support work centred around theology, not necessarily Christianity but usually enforcing the existence of a god.
