Research on antidepressants are problematic, when used in favour of them only show that they aren't so different from placebo. Study participants can guess if they are on the drug or not, which affects their expectations and reactions hence an 'amplified' placebo effect. There are placebos that can mimic side effects of drugs. Interestingly SSREs selective seretonin reuptake enhancers have are used as antidepressants
