Status Updates From Come Knocking: A Novel

I loved FantasticLand & the interview-style approach to his novels, which led me to this one. Both books explore the horrors that live inside everyday humans and how certain circumstances mutate our ability to deal with these moments. This one explores a 6-story experimental theater experience that walks through Dante’s inferno, but everything changed the night multiple people were killed. Just wild.

I didn’t realize this would have the same “narrator” as Fantasticland, but I like that additional sort of worldbuilding. Fantasticland’s journalist wanted to start a new project, and noticed that the immersive horror of the self-guided theater experience of Come Knocking and the tragedy that ensued at its end was made possible by what American society encourages in its population. Love that theme.
