This book described the horrors experienced during the killing fields in expressive ways. It is very well written about such devastating circumstances. As someone from a family who managed to escape Cambodia as a baby, this book opened my eyes to the unfathomable extent of what the Cambodian people experienced. Thank you for sharing your story, it is very admirable what you continue to do for the country.

“Don’t be a dependent housewife,” I told them. The voice I heard speaking sounded a lot like my mother’s. I smiled at the paradox: Here I was, delivering a lesson about self-reliance that I had failed to fully absorb before my mother’s death—and had learned the hard way thereafter.”

“We have a saying in Khmer: “If a father dies, the children eat rice with fish. If a mother dies, the children sleep on a leaf.” It means that when you lose your mother, you lose everything. She is the roof over your head and the rice in your bowl. She is your strength.”

“Many years ago, a taxi driver in Cambodia told her that her children would all be intelligent and educated, but she would bury them before she died. Then she had ignored the dark prophecies of taxi drivers, but now our plummeting fortunes had fueled her strange faith in fortune tellers and omens.”
