So to what degree can a work of fiction be viewed as a reflection of history? The first half of this book covers the opening months of the Great War. The Battle of the Marne has ended but the race to the sea is only just beginning. Already there is a realization that this war is different, the battles even in the early manoeuvre phase of the war resembling open-air slaughterhouses rather than military battles.

Good book to read if you’re interested in WW1. Would thoroughly recommend as it tells a story of people from different perspectives giving a thread of alternative trails through history in the early 1900s and the start of WW1.
