The two young ladies in Plumlington have both chosen the men they want to marry contrary to their fathers' wishes.

Catherine Carmichael or Three Years Running 4⭐️

Taking place in New Zealand, Cat's mother and father had passed away. Her father was close friends with Peter Carmichael. John, Peter's young kinsman, and Catherine had developed a close-almost-more-than-friends relationship when Peter makes plans to marry Cat (but in name only, he only wants a caretaker for his place). Cat hates him but feels she has no choice.

Alice Dugdale 4 ⭐️

Alice was the only child left at home (15yrs old) when her father the Doctor remarries and after many years, she had several little brothers and sisters. (She was an adult at this point). The eldest son of the Vicar came home from his military excursions and the busybodies of the village start trying to find the perfect wife for Major Rossiter.

The Lady of Launay 3 star

The negative side of reading so many short stories within a short time period: This story is very similar to two in the first short story collection. The mother tries to set her adopted daughter up with another man instead of the one the daughter loves (and the man loves her back.) Granted, times were different when people cared a great deal what other people would think. 🙄

The Telegraph Girl 3.5

Lucy lives with her brother working in his bookshop until his death. She goes to work for the Telegraph then shares a flat with Sophie who likes to spend her wages vs saving like Lucy. Sophie gets sick which puts them both in a bind. Along the way Mr. Hall comes to call on the ladies....

Christmas at Thompson Hall by Trollope 🧣🧣🧣🧣🧣

If you ever get a chance to read this one, I highly recommend. It's hilarious.

Mr and Mrs Brown are traveling on the night before Christmas Eve to go visit family at Thompson Hall. They spend the night in Paris before getting to TH and Mrs Brown tries to help Mr Brown who has a cold.

Christmas at Kirby Cottage 4 stars

I read this one back in December so not rereading it now. It was usual Trollope style where you're not sure how things are going to end up. I reviewed it in December so you can check that out if interested

Mrs Brumby 3.5⭐️

Mrs Brumby submitted a manuscript that she wanted published. The editors didn't think it was worthy of printing but didn't want to tell Mrs Brumby. She gets rather....upset.. shall we say. Lol

Thank goodness for Librovox for these last few "short" stories. This is another of Trollope's "Editor's Tales".

The Spotted Dog 3⭐️

Julius Mackenzie sends a letter to apply to work as an editor. His letter tells of his unsavory history but also his experience of working for a Penny Dreadful. They meet with him and his appearance gives them pause so they check out his work history... and family

The Panjandrum 3 stars

A group of literary type people want to start a magazine called "The Panjandrum". They meet weekly to work out the kinks but attitudes get in the way.

Josephine de Montmorencie 3.5 stars

Josephine writes a saucy letter to Mr. Brown because she wants him to take her manuscript to the publishers for print. We are privy to their correspondence with Mr. Brown's narration as he tries to meet with Ms. Montmorencie. Cute story. Wish it had had a better ending but it is a feel good story.

Mary Gresley 3.5 stars

The unknown narrator tutors Mary as she wants to become a writer the likes of Currer Bell (Charlotte Bronte) by writing of a story close to her heart.

The first 4 star of this book...

The Last Austrian in Venice..... taking place in 1866, Austria went to war with Italy as they fought over who would have possession of Venice. Pepe brings an Austrian soldier home and meets Pepe's sister. They fall in love but the war comes between them.

Father Giles of Ballymoy 3 stars

Our narrator goes to Ballymoy on business. He takes a room for the night then meets Father Giles in a most unexpected way.
