I am enjoying this so much! This author deserves lots more attention. Check this out if you like carnival stories, found family, literary fiction at its finest.

I am so glad this author came back to writing. I missed his nuance with words. This story is definitely going to go down as one of the best books I have read in a very long time. I will keep on raving if I don't stop and get back to it, but really, check this book out if you love outcasts, found family, and carnival atmospheres.

“He unzipped it, and the smell of aged vanilla flooded Trixie’s senses. She’d once read that old books smelled this way because they were living things, perpetually rotting, and the scent came from the process of their decay. What a beautiful thought, to be sweeter in death than in life.”

“Sunsets were the property of poets, for only they could adequately describe such majesty. Had he been asked to describe it, he would only be able to reply: ‘It’s fucking stunning.’”

“The most damning curse parents pass on to their children is expectation.”

“But this was the dichotomy of parenthood: the need to protect while knowing there was little one could do to effectively stave off the evil of the world.”

“Worst thing we can do is hide from all the bad life throws at us. You gotta have night every so often so that you can appreciate the sun when it does come out.”

Getting way too attached to these characters, and knowing this author’s past work, I’m sure I’m about to get my heart smashed.
