I hope there is a proper search, with an effort and intent to find an important will. No one *assumes* there is no will and lets an accessible house sit 20 years. Especially unlikely behaviour when they live in poverty and these papers would prove a nearby mansion belongs to them. I hope they don't merely find a secret room and the will by accident, because of the flycatcher bird's flight path in nest-building.
