I feel like I’ve read this book a dozen times before and yet despite the overused tropes, I’m enjoying the read. Perhaps it’s the Star Trek optimism, or getting the science and technology right, or it’s just an easy fun read. I think I’ll read it all if I can fight off the urge to jump ahead a few chapters whenever things get too predictable.

Still several months before the rescue ship can launch. No communication at all from the aliens.

This is pretty much hard SF right now. Still on the ground, trying to build the rescue ship, with LOTS of details about how they are building it.

Good so far. Seems to fall somewhere between hard SF and space opera’s hand waving. I like the fact that the president of USA and her VP are both female but find it highly unlikely. Main character is also female, currently an ABD grad student, and it’s rather unlikely IMO that even a male grad student wouldn’t get the discovery stolen by the NASA director or someone on the team with a PhD. But it’s fun!
